GALILEO GALILEI

Galileo Galilei was an Italian scientist who helped open the eyes of the world to a new way of thinking about the workings of our solar system and astronomy in general.

Galileo Galilei was born is Pisa, Italy, on the 15th of February 1564, he died on the 8th of January 1642.

Galileo was a ground breaking astronomer, physicist, mathematician, philosopher and inventor.  Among his inventions were telescopes, a compass and thermometer.

Galileo enrolled to do a medical degree at the University of Pisa but never finished, instead choosing to study mathematics.

Galileo built on the work of others to create a telescope with around a 3x magnification, he later improved on this to make telescopes with around a 30x magnification.

With these telescopes, Galileo was able to observe the skies in ways previously not achieved. In 1610 he made observations of 4 objects surrounding Jupiter that behaved unlike stars, these turned out to be Jupiter's four largest satellite moons: Io, Callisto, Europa and Ganymede.  They were later renamed the Galilean satellites in honor of Galileo himself.

Mars

Mars is the fourth planet from the sun in our milky way galaxy.  Mars is also has the longest and deepest rift in the solar system called Vales Marineris.  The average recorded temperature -63 C(-81 C)

Mars is also known or nicknamed the red planet because it is covered with rust-like dust.  Even the atmosphere is a pinkish red colored by tiny particles of dust thrown up from the surface.

Mars has many massive volcanoes and is home to Olympus Mons, is home in our solar system, it stands 21 km high and is 600 km across the bass.

Mars has a very thin atmosphere made mostly of carbon dioxide.

Mars has very weak gravity which cannot hold onto the atmosphere well.

Polar Ice caps-Mars has both North and South polar ice caps, much like Earth.  Also like Earth, both ice caps are made mostly of frozen water. With so much water frozen in the ice caps of Mars, some scientists think that life could have once existed there.

Length of a year-Mars  is not much farther from the sun than Earth. As a result, a typical year on Mars is 1 year and 320 days.

Olympus Mons on Mars is the largest mountain in the solar system at more than 25 kilometers high that's three times higher than Mount Everest. It is so big that astronomers could see through it telescopes in the 19 century.

Valles Marineris is the the largest canyon in the solar system, stretching 4,000 kilometers across the planet's surface .  If you look at a picture of Mars taken from a telescope,  you will see the giant gash the is Valles Marineris.

BLACK HOLES

If you were sucked into a black hole you'd be squeezed like a tube of toothpaste then ripped apart atom by atom until there was nothing left of you.

Well, when you put it that way, I wouldn't want to be near a black hole

What are black holes?
Have you ever had to vacuum your bedroom? When you do, watch closely because you will see the dirt and crumbs start to move towards the vacuum cleaner.  A black hole is similar to a vacuum cleaner, cleaning up debris left behind in outer space.
However, it is not suction power that makes things fall into a black hole.  Suction would not be strong enough.  Instead, a black hole uses the power of gravity to pull things towards it
